Your skin type and remedies according to Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian practice that believes in the three doshas: Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha. They are the three components that make up the human body and determine the state of its health. When the three of them are in complete harmony, then the person lives a very balanced and healthy life. But if any one of them is out of balance then it may express itself as a health problem.

These health problems can be of any part of the body, including problems of the skin. The main cause behind skin problems according to Ayurveda is impure blood. If the blood carries too many impure elements then it will result in unhealthy skin. Thus, one way to take care of it is to consume a mixture of turmeric, neem, and manjistha among other herbs for a skin detox (insert hyperlink).

Types of the skin according to Ayurveda

Vatta:

The Vatta skin type usually requires moisturization. It’s dry and rough to the touch. Possibly uneven too. The skin of the lips is also prone to cracking. Thus, those with this skin type are advised to use moisturizers that have a high oil content or apply oils like coconut oil directly to the face. They are also advised to consume spices and herbs like ginger and ashwagandha.

For the Vatta skin type, an ideal face mask would consist of chickpea flower or besan, a pinch of turmeric, and cold milk or yoghurt to mix it all up. Additionally, some rose water for fragrance and freshness can be added too. This is to be applied to the face and left for around ten minutes. After washing it off, a layer of moisturizer will keep the skin fresh and supple for a longer period of time.

Pitta:

The Pitta skin type is more prone to acne, allergies, and redness. It is of medium thickness and very sensitive. This skin type also tends to be dull and oily. That’s why herbs and spices that have a cooling effect are recommended for the Pitta skin type. Aloe vera, turmeric, milk, butter, and red sandalwood can work wonders for this skin type.

A homemade face pack for those with Pitta skin type would need pure aloe vera gel straight from the plant. It should not be processed in any way. A few drops of rose water will be required as well. First, the skin has to be cleaned with rosewater with the gentle dabs of a cotton ball. Then, apply the aloe vera gel and let it stay for around fifteen minutes. Once that is over, wash it off with lukewarm water and apply a layer of moisturizer. This should ideally be repeated twice or thrice a week.

Kapha:

Those with the Kapha type have excessively oily skin type because of which the dirt and impurities in the environment may stick to their skin and lead to more problems. To avoid this from happening, they must wash their face twice a day at least. This will wash away the impurities and make the skin healthier.

For the face pack, they can either use multani mitti mixed with a bit of water or combine turmeric and honey and apply it to the face. The mixture should be left on for fifteen minutes before washing them off with lukewarm water. This cleanses and purifies the skin, keeping the blackheads, whiteheads, and acne away. The application of honey should also be beneficial for this skin type.

These face packs along with a healthy balance of nutritious meals and regular exercise make one’s skin look radiant and youthful. It is also important to get adequate rest for the skin to heal. In today’s day and age, with easy access to processed food and exposure to pollutants, it has become imperative for every to make conscious choices towards a healthier lifestyle and skincare.

So, start your journey towards better skin health today.
